Harvard Square faces a number of important issues and changes.
Questions of good design and architectural preservation are important to HSNA - and an important part of our mission. The previous City Council voted to allow 12 and 15 story income-limited housing without parking, setbacks, or design oversight in Harvard Square as well as along key corridors, among these Mass Avenue, Mt Auburn Street, and Fresh Pond Parkway.
While we all support more affordable housing, we need to have a smart plan for this. The previous council also voted to gut neighborhood conservation districts such as the Marsh-Half Crown district and the Harvard Square Conservation District by removing heights and shapes of new buildings and additions from consideration by commissioners.
The current City Council is voting in November and December 2024 to allow 6 story (75 feet - the equivalent of 7.5 story) market rate housing in every neighborhood as of right, with no design oversight and with zero setbacks from the property line on the sides and rear of the properties.
There is an election next November (2024) for City Council and a number of the candidates are interested in more thoughtful planning and government transparency.
